The History of Agadir Oufella Kasbah

Agadir Oufella, often simply called the Kasbah of Agadir, is one of the most important historical landmarks in the city.

Its history goes back to the beginning of the 16th century, when the Portuguese established a settlement on the coast. In the 1530s, the Saadian ruler Mohamed Ech Cheikh ordered the construction of a fortress on the mountain overlooking the Portuguese settlement. In 1541, Saadian forces captured Santa-Cruz after a long siege, marking an important moment in the history of Agadir and Morocco.

During the Saadian period, Agadir became an important commercial port connected to trans-Saharan trade, with products from the Souss region, particularly sugar, playing an important role in the city's commercial activity. The strategic location of the Kasbah allowed it to overlook both the port and the surrounding approaches.

Later, the Kasbah was strengthened and developed into an important fortified settlement. Inside its walls, a community developed, transforming the fortress into much more than a military installation. Archaeological work today helps visitors understand the former urban fabric and daily life of historic Agadir.

The 1960 Agadir Earthquake

The history of Agadir Oufella cannot be separated from the devastating Agadir earthquake of February 29, 1960.

The earthquake struck at 11:41 p.m. and caused enormous destruction throughout the city. According to the official Agadir Oufella heritage site, more than 90% of the fortress was destroyed. The surviving southern wall became one of the most important physical witnesses to the city's past.

Today, the restored Kasbah allows visitors to discover parts of this historic site while remembering the people and communities affected by the disaster.

The site was officially reopened to the public in February 2024 after more than three years of restoration and redevelopment.
